About the Volkswagen Crafter platform
The Volkswagen Crafter stands as a premium and highly sought-after base vehicle for motorhome and campervan conversions in the UK, renowned for its car-like driving dynamics, robust build quality, and versatile platform. Available in various lengths, roof heights, and with front-wheel, rear-wheel, and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive options, the Crafter offers an exceptional foundation for a diverse range of mobile living spaces. Engine options include efficient 2.0-litre TDI diesel units, delivering a balance of power and fuel economy, typically ranging from 102 PS to 177 PS. Payload capacity is a critical factor for motorhome builders, and the Crafter excels here, often providing ample allowance for conversion materials, water tanks, and personal belongings, depending on the specific Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) chosen. Its popularity stems from several key attributes: the interior cabin is ergonomically designed and offers a comfortable, quiet driving experience, enhanced by advanced driver-assistance systems found in modern VW vehicles. The broad, flat load area makes interior fit-outs straightforward, while the availability of factory-fitted options like swivel seats, robust suspension, and even integrated electrical interfaces further simplifies the conversion process. Volkswagen's strong brand reputation for reliability and quality assurance also adds significant appeal, ensuring strong residual values and widespread service accessibility. The Volkswagen Crafter is ideally suited for discerning individuals or families seeking a high-quality, comfortable, and reliable motorhome or campervan. It appeals to those who value a refined driving experience, modern amenities, and the flexibility to create a bespoke living space, from compact two-berth tourers to spacious family-friendly campers. Its blend of practicality, performance, and aesthetic appeal positions it as a top contender for both professional converters and ambitious DIY enthusiasts.
