Buying a Bailey Orion Series 1 400-2
Who it suits
- Couples seeking a lightweight caravan that can be towed by smaller family cars.
- Tourers who prioritise a large washroom with a separate circular shower cubicle.
- Owners with limited driveway space who require a caravan under 5.4 metres in length.
Reasons to consider it
- The 1076kg MTPLM makes it one of the most accessible Alu-Tech models for light tow cars.
- High standard equipment levels including a Thetford Duplex oven and 800 watt microwave.
- The end washroom layout provides a level of privacy and space often reserved for larger models.
What to check
- Verify the operation of the Truma Ultrastore gas and electric water heater.
- Inspect the condition of the 'Walnut' wood grain cabinetry and 'Unity' soft furnishings.
- Test the Status 550 directional television aerial and the branded Radio/CD/MP3 player.
- Check the seals and integrity of the Alu-Tech bodyshell construction.
Worth knowing: Payload is limited to 117kg, requiring careful management of personal belongings. The 2.19 metre width is narrower than many modern caravans, which may affect internal shoulder room.
Compare the Bailey Orion Series 1 400-2 with similar models
| Model | Berths | MTPLM | Length | Typical price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bailey Orion Series 1 400-2 | 2 | 1076 kg | 5.35 m | £7,500 to £10,500 |
| Lunar Ariva | 2 | 1050 kg | 5.20 m | £8,000 to £18,000 |

The Bailey Orion Series 1 400-2 occupies a specific niche for couples who require the protection of Alu-Tech construction in a lightweight, 1076kg package. While the Swift Sprite Compact offers a similar 5.37 metre length, the Orion provides a distinct end washroom layout that contrasts with the more varied layouts of the Elddis Whirlwind. It remains a competitive choice for those balancing a sub-1100kg towing limit with the need for a full-sized separate shower.
Worth knowing: Specifications and prices can vary by model year, trim and optional equipment.
Ownership and Maintenance Tips
- Utilise the 800 watt microwave to supplement the limited kitchen worktop space during meal preparation.
- Ensure the Thetford 107 litre refrigerator is switched to the correct power source to preserve the full-width freezer contents.
- Clean the stainless steel microwave and Duplex oven regularly to maintain the high-specification interior finish.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Overloading the small external lockers, which can affect the noseweight of this 5.35 metre caravan.
- Assuming all small cars can tow it; always use a towing calculator for the 1076kg MTPLM.
Worth knowing: The 117kg payload must accommodate all water, gas bottles, and leisure batteries.
