Best small camper vans in the UK: eight compact models to compare
There is no single best small camper van for every buyer. A better shortlist starts with your use case: low roof for everyday driving, four sleeping berths, extra travel seats, a washroom, hybrid power or a more traditional two-person touring layout. The eight models below are all defined campervan products with live RoamWorthy model pages and current manufacturer information that we could verify on 26 September 2026.
How we chose them
To keep this comparison genuinely compact, each model has a manufacturer-published overall length of 5.50m or less. We only included defined campervan models with a current manufacturer page that gives enough detail to verify the model's size, sleeping capacity or core layout. We have not turned those facts into an arbitrary score, because the best choice changes with the job you need the camper to do.
Dimensions below are manufacturer reference figures for the current specification. Width conventions differ: some manufacturers quote mirrors folded or excluded, and accessories can alter height. Always confirm the exact vehicle before buying.
| Model | Manufacturer length | Height | Sleeping berths | Best fit to investigate |

| Volkswagen California | 5.173m | 1.972m | 4 | Low-roof everyday use with an integrated factory camper layout [7] |
| Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo | 5.140m | 1.901m | Up to 4 | Premium low-roof touring with a built-in kitchen and roof bed [8] [9] |
| Auto-Sleepers Symbol | 5.413m | 2.615m | 2 | Two-person touring with a more substantial fixed camper interior [1] |

Best small camper vans to investigate for everyday driving
Volkswagen California: Volkswagen publishes a 5.173m overall length and 1.972m height for the current California, with sleeping space for four and seating for up to five. That sub-2m published height is the key reason to investigate it if the camper must also handle everyday parking and normal non-camping journeys. [7]
Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo: Mercedes describes the Marco Polo as a factory camper with a kitchenette, rear double bed and roof bed for up to four sleepers. Mercedes' current vehicle data lists 5.140m length and 1.901m height for the Marco Polo derivative, making it another strong low-roof option to compare. [8] [9]
Panama P10E Hybrid: Panama publishes five travel seats, four berths and a plug-in-hybrid powertrain, plus all-electric cooking, heating and power equipment. At 5.040m long and 2.060m high, it is worth investigating if everyday passenger flexibility matters but you also want a four-berth camper. [2]
Best compact camper vans to investigate for families
Panama P12: the current P12 is four-berth with five approved travel seats as standard and the option of two additional travel seats, according to Panama. That makes the seating configuration its clearest point of difference in this shortlist. [3]
Panama P57: Panama publishes four travel seats and four berths, but its standout feature is a fully equipped washroom with cassette toilet, sink, shower and hot water inside a 5.440m body. If an onboard washroom is a requirement, this is the model in this group to inspect first. [4]
Panama P12+: at 5.440m, the P12+ uses the longer body for more interior space and storage while retaining five travel seats and four berths. It is the logical comparison against the shorter P12 when storage is the pressure point. [5]
Best compact camper vans to investigate for two-person touring
Auto-Sleepers Symbol: Auto-Sleepers publishes two berths, three designated passenger seats, a 5.413m length and a 2.615m standard-roof height. Its equipment list includes a full kitchen and more conventional campervan habitation features, so it suits buyers who value indoor touring facilities more than a sub-2m roofline. [1]
Panama P50+: the P50+ reverses the usual family-camper equation: Panama publishes six approved travel seats but two sleeping berths. That makes it particularly relevant if the van needs to carry more people during everyday use but only sleep a couple on trips. [6]
Three decision rules before you shortlist
- Write down your hard height limit. In this group, manufacturer-published heights run from about 1.90m to 2.62m. That difference matters more than a badge if you use barriers, covered parking or a garage.
- Separate travel seats from sleeping berths. A van can carry six people and sleep two, or carry five and sleep four. Never infer one number from the other.
- Check width conventions. Manufacturer width figures are not perfectly standardised. Auto-Sleepers states mirrors folded and extended; Panama publishes both; Volkswagen states width with and without mirrors. Compare like with like before using width as a deal-breaker. [1] [3] [7]
The two-people, wet-weekend test
Specifications get you to the shortlist. The conversion itself decides whether you will enjoy owning it. When you view a van, shut the doors and imagine two people inside with wet coats, bedding and luggage.
- Make and unmake the bed yourself.
- Check whether both people can still sit once the sleeping area is prepared.
- Find a real home for shoes, coats, bedding and charging cables.
- Test ventilation and roof operation.
- Check whether the kitchen remains usable with another person inside.
- Confirm exactly what toilet, water and washing provision the specific vehicle has.
Data limitations
This is a comparison of current manufacturer specifications, not a laboratory test and not a reliability ranking. Model specifications can change, optional equipment can alter dimensions, and used examples may represent older generations. The RoamWorthy model page may cover more than one model year. Treat the figures here as a verified starting point and confirm the registration-year specification and physical vehicle before purchase.
