Transverse Bed Caravan Layout & Floor Plan

A transverse bed (also called a crossways bed) runs across the caravan from side to side rather than along its length. This orientation is space-efficient, allowing shorter floor lengths while still accommodating full-length sleeping. Transverse beds are common in rear bedroom layouts and some front lounge configurations. They can be fixed or make-up style. The main consideration is headroom and access – depending on caravan design, one or both ends of a transverse bed may have restricted space. They work particularly well in caravans with rear windows, as sleepers have a view out.

Where you'll find it: Typically at the rear of the caravan, sometimes in front lounge areas

    Advantages

    • Space-efficient use of floor length

    • Width limited by caravan interior width
    • Access can be limited depending on position

    Best For

    Frequently Asked Questions

A transverse bed runs across the width of the caravan rather than along its length. This space-efficient orientation allows shorter floor lengths while still providing full-length sleeping. Common in rear bedroom layouts, transverse beds can be fixed or convertible.

Each has trade-offs. Transverse beds save floor length and work well in shorter caravans, but you may have restricted headroom at the sides. Island beds offer hotel-like access from both sides but require more floor space. Choose based on your caravan length and access preferences.

Transverse beds suit couples who want a fixed bed in a shorter, more towable caravan. They're ideal if you prioritise living space over bedroom luxury, or if you want rear window views from bed. Not ideal if you need easy access from both sides.

The main considerations are: width limited by caravan interior (typically 180-200cm), potential headroom restrictions at the sides, and one partner may need to climb over the other. Test the actual bed before buying to ensure it suits taller occupants.
