What we check
Towing capacity vs MTPLM
Your car's maximum braked towing capacity is a hard limit. The caravan's MTPLM must never exceed this figure.
The 85% guideline
For safe, stable towing, the caravan's laden weight should be no more than 85% of your car's kerbweight. Experienced towers may go up to 100%, but never beyond.
What borderline means
A ratio between 85% and 100% is legal but requires more skill. We flag this so you can decide based on your experience and typical towing conditions.
Gross Train Weight (GTW)
If you provide your GTW, we check that your fully loaded car plus caravan doesn't exceed this combined limit.
