RoamWorthy’s tow-car catalogue combines real calculator demand, verified vehicle facts and model-level evidence into a publication-ready database designed to help caravan buyers narrow the field before checking an exact vehicle.

For this report we took a snapshot of the RoamWorthy tow-car database on 31 August 2026. The published set contained 237 models from 38 makes, representing 6,957 catalogue samples. We then looked at the model-level median braked towing limit, evidence depth and the spread between the lowest and highest supported towing limits within each model.

How much towing capacity is actually common?

The first useful finding is the shape of the catalogue. The median of all 237 model-level median towing limits is 1,600kg. In other words, the centre of the published tow-car universe is much closer to the needs of mainstream single-axle caravans than to the 3,500kg headline figures often associated with large SUVs and pickups.

That drop-off matters. A buyer looking for a car with a model median around 1,500–2,000kg has a large field to compare. Move the requirement above 2,500kg and the choice narrows quickly. At 3,000kg-plus, the market represented in our catalogue becomes a specialist group dominated by larger SUVs, pickups and utility vehicles.

The strongest heavy-towing models in our data

To stop a thinly sampled model from topping the table by accident, this ranking only includes models with at least 10 catalogue samples. We rank by the median braked towing limit, not the single highest figure we have ever seen for that badge.

The Land Rover result is unsurprising given the make’s large-SUV mix, while Volkswagen’s breadth is notable because its 23 published models cover everything from ordinary passenger cars to vans and heavy-towing SUVs. These counts describe the current RoamWorthy catalogue, not UK market share or sales volume.

How strong is the evidence?

We do not publish every observation that enters the system. The publication-ready snapshot is gated for canonical make/model identity, towing evidence, a minimum sample threshold and usable media. Within the 237 published models, 153 are currently rated high quality, accounting for 5,902 of the 6,957 catalogue samples. A further 77 models are rated medium quality, with a small remainder supported by legacy verified baselines or other publication-qualified evidence.

For the heavy-tow ranking above we added another guardrail: a minimum of 10 samples. That does not make every number immutable. It simply makes the ranking much less vulnerable to one unusual derivative or a very thin model record.
